The Hamburg University of Technology is pleased to announce the awarding of the title of Professor in accordance with §17 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act to Dr. Volker Lenz. The conferral of this title is a special distinction granted only on the basis of outstanding achievements—comparable to those of a regularly appointed professor. The candidates often bring a high level of practical experience, thereby optimally complementing teaching. In this case, TU Hamburg honors the outstanding achievements of Volker Lenz in the field of integration of renewable energies.
Expert for the Energy Transition
Dr. Lenz, Head of the Thermo-chemical Conversion Department and Research Focus Leader for SmartBiomassHeat at the Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) in Leipzig, is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the context of the energy transition. At TU Hamburg, his close collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics is particularly noteworthy: Since the winter semester 2018/2019, Prof. Lenz has been teaching the elective course “Integration of Renewable Energies I and II.” This course mainly focuses on exploring current technical possibilities to integrate all renewable energies in such a way that the transformation towards climate-neutral energy supply by 2045 becomes possible, taking into account economic, legal, and acceptance-related aspects.
In addition to leading scientists and technical staff as well as conducting his own research and publications, Volker Lenz also advises the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and gives numerous lectures at national and international forums. “I am especially delighted about this award—on the one hand, because it underscores and honors the relevance of my efforts to integrate renewable energies, and on the other hand, because I myself earned my doctorate here at TU Hamburg in 2011,” said the newly appointed professor.
